Trump Pardons Dwight and Steve Hammond

The recent grant of clemency to Oregon ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond has brought the whole saga of their case and the occupation of the Malhuer National Wildlife Refuge back to front-page status here in Oregon. Old debates about the merits of the Hammond’s federal criminal case and their sentences, and the ensuing occupation of the Malhuer National Wildlife Refuge rage anew. And while the criminal proceedings against the occupiers have all concluded at the trial court level here in Oregon, four of the occupiers convicted after the second trial in Oregon continue to pursue their appeals before the Ninth Circuit. Some are now asking might the President go so far as to pardon the occupiers themselves.  To be sure, this divisive and unique chapter in Oregon’s recent history is far from closed.
